Kuzey Star Shipyard delivered the first of two LNG-powered Ro-Ro vessels built for Russia's FSUE Rosmorport. The Ro-Ro vessel named Marshal Rokossovsky departed from Tuzla at the beginning of January 2022 and set course for the Port of Baltiysk in Russia, reaching its operational area in the Baltic Sea. The 199-meter-long Marshal Rokossovsky, classified as Arc4 ice class, is equipped with two dual-fuel main engines that run on LNG. The vessel can also use low-sulfur diesel fuel. The ferry, ordered by FSUE Rosmorport, was constructed by Nevsky Shipyard LLC in collaboration with Kuzey Star Shipyard, and designed by SPb LLC.
The ship delivered by Kuzey Star Shipyard will operate on the Ust-Luga to Baltiysk route, a route of strategic importance for Russia. Marshal Rokossovsky is notable for being the first Ro-Ro vessel in Russia capable of operating on LNG. In addition to cars, trucks, and trailers, the vessel can also carry rail wagons. FSUE Rosmorport plans to strengthen its fleet with another Ro-Ro vessel of the same specifications, General Chernyakhovsky, which is currently under construction at Kuzey Star Shipyard and is expected to be delivered later this year. By adding these two new ferries to its fleet, FSUE Rosmorport aims to ease transportation in the Kaliningrad region and redirect some of the cargo traffic currently passing through neighboring countries onto Russian territory.
